“Life is not a Cakewalk. Life is Great!”– Professor M.S.Rao

“What matters in life is not what happens to you but what you remember and how you remember it.” ― Gabriel García Márquez

Young people often take life for granted. They think that if they work hard, they will get results quickly. If they encounter failures, they easily get upset and give up their goals. What they must learn is that they must work hard with focus and commitment irrespective of the outcome. If they fail, they must find out the reasons and change their methods of preparation to achieve an amazing success.

A young person looks at the future, middle aged person looks at the present and old age person looks at the past. It is the law of life.  Aristotle quoted, “The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival.”

Recently one of my students approached me with sadness. He said that he was very unlucky as he lost his father when he was very young, and his mother was taking care of entire family. He wanted to become a civil servant but failed to make it at the end. I explained to him about Abraham Lincoln who encountered lots of failures in business, professional, political and personal life throughout his life. Finally, he became the President of America. He believed in his dreams, learned lessons from his failures and moved on aggressively to make it big. Globally Abraham Lincoln is an amazing example of inspiration for many people for his tenacity and resilience. He is also a symbol of hope.

Paulo Coelho quoted, “But there is suffering in life, and there are defeats. No one can avoid them. But it's better to lose some of the battles in the struggles for your dreams than to be defeated without ever knowing what you're fighting for.”  Life is full of ups and downs, peaks and valleys, fames and shames, stars and scars, and successes and failures. You must take the life the way it comes. Don’t think about your unpleasant past which cannot be changed. Don’t think about the future which cannot be predicted. Think only about the present you have. Enjoy the journey of life with your eye on your destination. You will achieve your goals and accomplish your dreams when you work hard, smart and wise.  My student was happy with my response and promised me that he would learn lessons from failures and work harder to accomplish his dreams. I felt very happy with his response and smile on his face.  To conclude, success doesn’t come overnight. It takes years of continuous and relentless efforts towards your goals.

Life is not a cakewalk. Life is great!

“How to Overcome Your Anxiety, Depression and Suicidal Tendencies?”– Professor M.S.Rao

“Your incredible brain can take you from rags to riches, from loneliness to popularity, and from depression to happiness and joy - if you use it properly.” - Brian Tracy

When you look at famous people like Mark Twain, F Scott Fitzgerald, JK Rowling, Ingmar Bergman, Woody Allen, Leonard Cohen, and Kurt Cobain, they all suffered from depression.

Research shows that depression has become a major challenge globally. Many people suffer from depression but hesitate to disclose it to others due to the stigma attached to it. Some of them don’t realize that they suffer from depression. Reports show that depression is high in developing countries, and is higher in women than in men. Hence, I will address this issue in this post.

There are many reasons for depression such as divorce, death of near ones, bankruptcy, and failed love to name a few. It is a fact that life is not a cakewalk as it is full of challenges. Additionally, life is a circus as there will be peaks and valleys. Neither success nor failure is permanent. When we take life the way it comes, we will be able to stay away from depression. Most people have their dreams and want to accomplish them. And most times, things don’t happen as the way planned leading to setbacks and failures. Life throws lots of challenges and people must be prepared to accept them. There are a number of aspects which are beyond our control. We must accept this fact. At the same time, we must pursue our goals without losing any sight from distractions.

To overcome depression, it is essential to share our feelings, emotions and challenges to trusted people. Maintaining healthy family relations is the key to successful life. Most people think that success is all about money and fame. The real success is to connect with their families as it is the family that supports during the challenges. Reflect yourself why things went wrong and take remedial steps to avoid repeating them. Research shows that people waste 30 percent of their time by thinking about their unpleasant past which cannot be changed. Hence, don’t brood about your unpleasant past and don’t worry about future which cannot be predicted. Learn to live in present which is at your disposal. It is essential to admit that failure is an integral part of life. Therefore, accept failures but don’t take them personally. Learn lessons from failures and move on. When you look at Abraham Lincoln, he underwent innumerable challenges during his lifetime. He failed in business, politics and in love life. He had nervous breakdown. He displayed his resilience to finally become the 16th President of America. He was successful because he never took his failures personally. He learned lessons from failures, took precautions and moved on. He took his life as a challenge. Therefore, you must take your life as a challenge.

We don’t carry any wealth when we depart this world. We either leave good or bad reputation. Therefore, learn to live with dignity. Balance your personal, professional and social life. Spend your time regularly with your family members. Keep a few good friends to share your feelings and emotions which provide an outlet to relieve your anxiety and depression. Go for meditation or yoga. Do physical exercises regularly to energize yourself. Maintain healthy and positive friends to create positive vibrations. Look at the door that is opened, not the closed one. Set audacious goals and engage your mind to achieve them. In this way, you will be able to beat your anxiety and stay away from depression. To conclude, accept the realities of life and enjoy the every moment of your life journey to provide meaning to your life. Life is great!

“Do We Overestimate about Ourselves and Underestimate Others?”– Professor M.S.Rao

“Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.” —Sam Walton

It is observed that most people often overestimate about their capabilities, competencies, knowledge, skills and abilities and underestimate others’ due to their superiority complex. It is also observed that a few people underestimate their own strengths and overestimate others’ strengths due to their inferiority complex. In fact, both are wrong. What is essential is to estimate accurately about oneself by weighing strengths and weaknesses and respecting others’ knowledge, skills and abilities.

People must have self-esteem. They must value and love themselves. Only when they love themselves, they will be able to love the people around them. Mark McKeon rightly quoted, "Don't worry about impressing others, impress yourself. Who are you trying to please, anyway?" Never compare with others. If you compare yourself with others, you are insulting yourself. Remember, you are God’s gift to this world. Nobody can be like you and you cannot be like anybody else.  Denis Waitley once remarked, "If you have real internal value, you don't need a loud, expensive imitation."

Excessive ego and hubris are obstacles to one’s advancement. They lead to ineffective interpersonal relations and invite criticism from others. Hence, respect the strengths of others with an open mind and with a big heart. It requires a positive and right attitude on the part of the people. It paves the way to building soft skills and improved relations around them. To conclude, don’t underestimate or overestimate yourself. Learn to appreciate your strengths and also of others’ strengths to grow as a successful person and as a good leader.

"The most influential person who will talk to you all day is you, so you should be very careful about what you say to you!" -- Zig Ziglar
