“Work for Satisfaction, not for Recognition ― Be Above Padma Awards” ―Professor M.S.Rao




“It requires a lot of courage to become an educator as it is not for everybody. If a parent is unworthy, children are spoiled; if a doctor neglects his duty, the patient dies; if an engineer performs poorly, the infrastructure collapses; and if an educator makes a mistake, an entire generation is ruined.” ― Professor M.S. Rao, Author of ‘Vision 2030: One Million Global Leaders.’


Padma Awards are very prestigious awards given by government of India for contribution to various areas every year. They are awarded for exceptional and distinguished service. They were instituted in 1954 to be awarded to citizens of India in recognition of their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Medicine, Social Service and Public Affairs. They have also been awarded to some distinguished individuals who were not citizens of India but contributed in various ways to India. The recommendations for Padma Awards are received from the State Governments/Union Territory Administrations, Central Ministries/Departments, Institutions of Excellence, etc. which are considered by an Awards Committee. On the basis of the recommendations of the Awards Committee, and after approval of the Home Minister, Prime Minister and President, the Padma Awards are announced on the eve of the Republic Day. They are conferred by the President at a function in Rashtrapati Bhawan in March/April every year. Most Indians consider it an honor to receive these prestigious awards.

Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. However, there are controversies behind these awards. There is often a criticism that some deserving citizens were denied due to political reasons. There are allegations that the eminent people who are close to the government or in the good books of the politicians in the power are bagging these awards.

It is deplorable that some celebrities demand these awards publicly. They use social media to brand themselves and kick up controversies rather than adding value to their domains. It appears that they work hard only for awards, not for their satisfaction and for becoming role models for others. It is unfortunate that most of them overestimate about themselves and underestimate others.


Are Padma Awards a Farce?

There is a feeling that those who are good at networking and lobbying with money power get these awards. The people who have strong connections in the Central Government and the ruling party receive these awards. Critics comment that the selection process is completed flawed since there is limited time available to shortlist the nominations.  They feel that it is a stage-managed drama to conduct the process of selection, and finally the pre-decided list is placed before the committee for endorsement. There is involvement of vote bank politics and regional issues. To overcome the challenges, maintain transparency in the selection process to ensure sanctity to these awards. Remember, it is not who is right or wrong but what is right or wrong matters in the selection process.

The awards must be given to meritorious people with credentials. The background verification must be done before giving away awards. People with criminal background should not be given these awards to avoid mockery and ensure sanctity.


Padma Awards for Educators and Intellectuals

It is unfortunate that the eminent people from academia are not getting their share of awards as they are shy to market themselves. On the other hand, film stars, cricketers and politicians market themselves to get noticed quickly to bag these awards.  It is ironical that cinema and cricket receive more attention and coverage than academia in India.

Government of India must consider giving more awards to educators who build nation by shaping students as healthy citizens and leaders. The intellectuals and educators are not selling themselves currently. In a country like India, they are admired with great respect but not given adequate representation in allocation of awards. It is time Indian government considered allocating more awards to educators and intellectuals.


Work for Satisfaction, not for Recognition

Padma Awards are only recognition to your distinguished service. Your satisfaction that you truly added value to your area and the people around you is more important than the so-called recognition. Do your duty sincerely without expecting any returns. You will be recognized and earn such awards. Above all, remember to live in the hearts of the people, not in the minds of the people. Padma Awards can take you to the minds of the people temporarily whereas when you truly add value to your domain and society, you live in the hearts of the people permanently. When you look at late A.P.J Abdul Kalam, he lives in the hearts of the people. When you look at Mahatma Gandhi he did not receive Nobel Prize but five of his followers ― Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, Barack Obama, and Aung San Sui Kyi received Nobel Prizes. It is obvious that Mahatma Gandhi was above Nobel Prize.

To conclude, deliver your best to your area without expecting any returns. Add value to your area and make a difference to the world. Be above Padma Awards. You will be remembered beyond your lifetime as a legend.

Unleash the Leader in You

We are all blessed with a huge potential. We must understand this fact and unlock our potential. However, most people waste their precious time by thinking about their unpleasant past which cannot be changed, and worrying about their future which cannot be predicted. What we have now is the present. Hence, we must make use of the present to unlock our hidden potential to achieve amazing success in life, and help others grow in their lives.

Great leaders are great learners, and help build the next generation of leaders. Hence, you must grow as a leader first to groom others as leaders.

Most people think that they cannot become leaders, when in fact, everybody is a leader. The mother who leads at home; the father who takes responsibility; and the janitor who delivers his goods with excellence is a leader. Leaders are the ones who lead from the front by taking responsibility. They spread fame during successes and take blame during failures.

Hence, take responsibility to lead from the front. Realize your hidden potential as everybody is born as a genius, and nobody is born as a stupid. Develop a positive, right, and strong attitude to excel in your life. Contribute your best. Emphasize excellence regardless of the area of activity you are into. Emphasize means, not ends. Keep people before profit. Make the people around you special, and help them dream and achieve big.

Time is very precious. Whether you are rich or poor, you are blessed with time. Make use of it wisely. You have only one life. Hence, use your time judiciously to provide meaning to your life.

Balance your personal, professional and social life. Trifurcate your goals into three categories such as personal, professional and social goals. Set these goals based on your passions and value system.

Here is the way to go about setting these goals in your life. Ask yourself what you want to achieve in your personal life. Find out your strengths and weaknesses, and set your personal goals based on your passions and strengths. Identify the careers in which you are passionate about, and set your professional goals accordingly.

Finally, what value would you like to add to society? What would you like to be remembered for? And set your social goals accordingly.

Surround yourself with positive people to build a better world. Remember that knowledge is more important than money. Hence, share your knowledge to make a difference to the world.

Work for satisfaction, not for recognition. Remember, satisfaction is the end-product while recognition is the by-product. Be passionate about what you do. Don’t worry about setbacks. Think out-of-the box to achieve success in your personal, professional and social life.

Be a continuous learner and take feedback constantly to grow in life. As long as you love and learn, you are young. The day you stop loving people and learning things, you become old.

Imagine how different your world would be if you started each day with the wisdom learned from household names like Sir Richard Branson (Virgin) and Guy Laliberte (Cirque du Soleil) to thought leaders like Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul) and Marci Shimoff (The Secret). So far more than 1000 Luminaries have been featured, including me. That's a lot of inspiration and I'm proud to be a part of it!

Remember, when we get caught up in our own stories and start to forget our own design as infinite beings, it is inspiration that turns the ordinary into extraordinary, fear into hope and the darkness into light. Inspiration reminds us that we are greater than we seem, and more resilient and powerful than we think.

Welcome to Sharing Leadership Ideas and Insights: Moments and Memories on Indian Educational Institutions through Storytelling. I am passionate about students and sharing my knowledge with them. I served as a professor in various Indian educational institutions with several memories and moments. In this book, I share leadership ideas and insights and my sweet and bitter experiences with various educational institutions. Currently there are innumerable challenges for students, educators, parents, managements and regulating bodies including AICTE. This book is an endeavor to highlight the challenges from all stakeholders to address them earnestly to build a strong Indian education system and a healthy society.


Vision 2030: One Million Global Leaders

I have a dream that I will build one million students as global leaders by 2030. I am confident that I will make it happen.

Globally there is a looming leadership crisis due to the retirement of Baby boomers. Gen Y is not ready to undertake leadership roles and responsibilities since they are not equipped with leadership skills and abilities. Due to the sudden exit of Baby boomers, organizations will suffer due to dearth of experienced leadership talent. Therefore, I created a vision to build one million students as global leaders by 2030. Since I belong to Gen X, I consider it an opportunity to bridge the gap between the Baby boomers and Gen Y. I am passionate about leadership and teaching profession. Additionally, I am passionate about students. I have diversified areas of experience including defence, industry, teaching, training and consultancy. Hence, I decided to blend my diversified experiences with my passionate area of leadership to build global leaders. Some of my students express their reservations about my vision. I inform that I am only 53 years old with very high energy levels with a passion to make a difference to the world.  Additionally, I make use of social media to reach out to students globally.

To achieve anything in life, dream is imperative.  I have a dream that I will be able to build one million students as global leaders by 2030. It is possible as age is my favor and I have already trained 35000 students so far, and I can easily accomplish my dream to build the balance global leaders by 2030.  I also started building team of students to work with me through online to accomplish my vision. Leaders are dreamers; they craft their vision and work hard relentlessly to accomplish their vision. Remember, everything is possible if there is passion, vision, commitment, and persistence.

“Duryonodhan’s Underwater Meditation in Mahabharat Epic” ―Professor M.S.Rao









“Most people think that aging is irreversible and we know that there are mechanisms even in the human machinery that allow for the reversal of aging, through correction of diet, through anti-oxidants, through removal of toxins from the body, through exercise, through yoga and breathing techniques, and through meditation.” ― Deepak Chopra


Success is the outcome of learnable behaviors and habits. Successful people identify and adopt certain habits and behaviors to achieve greatness in their life.

Successful people are not born with unique habits. They are born like any other ordinary people but cultivated a few habits during the course of life and practiced to achieve greatness. They relentlessly followed those habits resulting in amazing success. They were unmindful of temporary setbacks since they had a long-term vision to accomplish their goals. Research shows that meditation alleviates anxiety, pain and prevents depression.  It eliminates distractions and enhances your focus to accomplish your goals.


Merits of Meditation

When you confront challenges daily, your mind becomes a big mess. Hence, it is advisable to do meditation daily. Meditation cleans the cobwebs in your mind. It connects your mind, body, and soul. It connects your inner world with outside world easily. It eliminates stress and anxiety to ensure inner peace. It helps you understand realities in your life. It makes you realistic and humble. It helps you empathize with others and eliminates conflicts. 


Perform Underwater Meditation

In the Mahabharat epic, Duryodhan performed underwater meditation to keep his mind calm and composed. He had the ability to stay for long time under the water without breathing. Some people interpreted it as an act of cowardice to hide below the water when he almost lost his Kurukshetra war against Pandavas. But the fact is that when you remain underwater for some time, your mind becomes cool and composed. You get peace and tranquility. You reflect a lot and get energized to encounter your challenges with confidence and mettle. You also build inner power, and you are in a position to unlock your hidden potential.


Conclusion

We have seen several leaders and CEOs adopting this technique in this form or other form to remain cool, calm, composed and charismatic. It helped them work under pressure without losing their focus and delivering their best. Most leaders take break once in a week to keep their minds free from organizational pulls and pressures. We have also seen employees taking a sabbatical to follow their passionate areas or to work for nonprofits. It provides them break from routine chores and gives them sense of satisfaction that they made a difference to the society. It energizes them and organizes their minds. Hence, adopt this unique technique of performing underwater meditation to unleash the leader in you.
