“How Leaders Like APJ Abdul Kalam, Manmohan Singh and S.Radhakrishnan Reinvented from Government Servants to Public Servants?” ―Professor M.S.Rao

“No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come.” ―Victor Hugo

There are a few government servants who became public servants in India. They worked very hard behind the scenes for many years in their respective areas. They came to the forefront as their services were recognized by the leaders at the top.  Let us look at some of them.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was a great scientist who was a tough task master. He spent four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He dedicated his life to science and technology. His services were recognized by top leaders in India. He was elevated to the post of President. He set a goal of conducting 500,000 one-on-one meetings with young people over the course of his five-year term. He added dignity and grace to the post, and finally became a People’s President in India.

Dr. Manmohan Singh was an economist. He was spotted by P.V. Narasimha Rao who elevated him as the Finance Minister of India. Dr. Singh was the architect of India's reforms programme. He played a crucial role when India’s economy was on the brink of bankruptcy. He introduced economic reforms with the support of late P.V. Narasimha Rao. He was subsequently elevated as the Prime Minister of India. History will remember that a Sikh (Dr. Manmohan Singh) who was nominated for Prime Ministership by a Christian Congress president (Sonia Gandhi) and sworn in by a Muslim President (Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam).

S. Radhakrishnan was an academician. Top leaders recongised his intellectual contributions to the area of education. He was elevated to the post of President whose birthday is celebrated as the ‘Teachers Day’ in India.

Ekkadu Srinivasan Lakshmi Narasimhan was an IPS officer from Andhra Pradesh cadre who became the Director of the Intelligence Bureau.  He was elevated as the Governor of Chhattisgarh. Presently he is the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State. He is non-controversial who added an immense value to the post of Governor.

All these leaders were in the backseat as government servants contributing their best in their own spheres consistently. Finally, their services were recognized, and elevated as public servants. Hence, contribute your best to your domain relentlessly. Add value seriously and sincerely. You will be noticed and recognized by others. You will be able to reach your pinnacle position to make a difference to the society.

“Bhutan’s ‘Gross National Happiness’ Index” ―Professor M.S.Rao

“Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” ―Buddha

Ideally any nation’s growth is measured by its economic development. However, the tiny remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is an exception where it first invented the idea of using happiness as a measure of good governance. It coined 'Gross National Happiness' index thus becoming a trendsetter to other nations globally. Many nations are taking a leaf out of Bhutan to keep their people happy.

Nations adopt Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but Bhutan adopted “Gross National Happiness" (GNH) in 1972.  It was proposed by Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the country's former king and the father of the present king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. This new perspective put Bhutan on the global map. Bhutan became the benchmark for happiness globally. GDP measures the economic health of a country while GNH measures the happiness of a country.

Previously companies emphasized on the slogan of ‘customers first, employees second and shareholders third’. But presently companies emphasize on ‘employees first, customers second and shareholders third’. In a similar spirit, a nation’s well being must be measured by people’s happiness rather than by so-called economic development. Only when the people are happy, they will be able to contribute their best and achieve economic progress.

This new concept is worthy to be explored by other nations. What every nation ultimately wants is that their people must be happy. Hence, it is time nations followed this concept.

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." ―Albert Schweitzer

“Reinvent the Principles of Human Resources to Grow as a Soft Leader” ―Professor M.S.Rao

“Take away my people, but leave my factories, and soon grass will grow on the factory floors. Take away my factories, but leave my people, and soon we will have a new and better factory.” ―Andrew Carnegie

Human Resources (HR) is the backbone of any organization as it deals with all aspects of employees from recruitment to retirement including wages and welfare. As the war for talent is high globally, HR is more focused than ever before. Presently there is a drastic shift from manual workers to knowledge workers worldwide where people aspire to become consultants rather than contractors. Additionally, the aspirations and expectations of the employees are rising rapidly.

Men versus Machine

Previously it was the machine behind the men counted. But presently it is the men behind the machine counts. Organizations are crying for talent. There is scarcity of right talent globally and it is a great opportunity for the right talent to explore and grow globally.

There is a limit to machines but there is no limit to human potential as human potential is infinite while the machine potential is finite. Elbert Hubbard rightly remarked, "One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man."  It is a fact that machines can be handled easily whereas people cannot be handled as people have different emotions, egos and feelings. Handling them is a very challenging task as they have different expectations and aspirations. Knowing what motivates them is another major challenge. At times they don’t gel well with other members in the team and leaders find it very challenging to lead and retain them. Here the role of HR comes into the picture to handle people from entry to exit effectively. Additionally, the HR must reinvent with latest principles and philosophies by keeping pace with the expectations and aspirations of all stakeholders, and to stay ahead of times and technologies.

Irony of HR

The job of HR is highly glorified globally. But most HR leaders consider it a thankless job as they have an impression that they remain as king makers and queen makers and cannot become kings and queens. They create CEOs but they cannot step into the position of CEOs. They serve as ladders for the growth of others to the tipping point but they cannot reach that level. It is the irony of HR.

Conclusion

Renee West quoted, “You can have the best strategy and the best building in the world, but if you don’t have the hearts and minds of the people who work with you, none of it comes to life.” Hence, emphasize more on people, not strategy. Emphasize more on men, not machine. Reinvent the principles of HR to stay ahead of your times and technologies. To summarize, your most valuable asset is your precious human resources. Make sure that they go home happily and return to office with excitement. Remember, your employees are your brand ambassadors. Care for them; respect them and retain them to accomplish your organizational goals and objectives and to grow as a soft leader.

“I am convinced that nothing we do is more important than hiring and developing people. At the end of the day you bet on people, not on strategies.” ―Lawrence Bossidy, GE
