“Don't Underestimate the Power of a Common Man in India” ―Professor M.S.Rao

It is wrong to underestimate the power of a common man. In fact, the common man in India is very powerful. If he wants, he can shake the systems and change the governments. If he has the will power, he can fight against any individuals at the top.  There are instances where the common man filed cases against (Public Interest Litigation) top brass and put them behind the bars.


Who is a Common Man?

The meaning of common man in India is the representation of an average Indian. He symbolizes more than one billion Indians and their hopes and aspirations. The eminent cartoonist, R K Laxman coined it. Indian films often associate with the common man to connect with their audiences. They highlight the characters of heroes and heroines with the common man. The viewers enjoy seeing the films as they get into the shoes of their characters and feel that they fought against injustice.


Power of Indian Media

Indian media is very powerful. It can either make or break the governments. It highlights the injustice and irregularities in the systems. In fact, press is the fourth pillar of democracy. The Indian press is very strong where it exposed corruption in higher places; booked the culprits; and brought down the governments. There is an impression that the press gets sold out to some rich and influential individuals in India. It is not correct totally.  In fact, Indian media highlights seriously and sincerely the challenges of the common man to connect with them to bring the social change in India.

Indian democracy may not be as strong as American democracy but it is reasonably strong to check irregularities and corruption. That is the reason why India’s democracy survived many years when democracy failed in some countries ending up with dictatorship.


India Calls for Enlightened Leadership

“Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

Bringing the change within the system is not an easy task. It calls for lots of struggles and sacrifices. You must fight the cause despite threats to your life. You must be passionate about the people and persevere your goals to make things happen in the right direction.

Don’t blame the system. Take action to bring it to the notice of the people. Mobilize their support. You will be surprised about the outcomes. India is a country where Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi and it shows the power of the common man.

When you want to bring the change in the system, don’t look for recognition. In contrast, you must look for satisfaction about the difference you make to the society.  India needs enlightened citizens to ensure enlightened leadership. It is possible only through the power of the common man. Anna Hazare’s crusade against corruption is a reflection of common man in India. Remember, the common man always wins if he is just and right. If all educated Indians contribute their best, India will become a great country in the world.


Be the Change

When Flipkart tried to fool us, one wise man stood up and taught them a lesson. One man can pull a huge mountain, one ordinary man can defeat an entire government, one man can shut down a billion dollar company. Yes, we are talking about the power of a common man – the power in you[1].  The common man can teach lessons to mighty individuals and institutions. He can change the world. One person who can change the world is YOU. Hence, you must take initiative to correct the irregularities and corruption in the system. Voice your views openly. Bring up the challenges in the Indian system such as corruption and irregularities to the forefront of the people. There are several rape incidents, atrocities on women, gender discrimination, honor killings, terrorism, extortions, and accidents that you can highlight to bring it to the notice of the people. Pioneer the social causes and strive for global peace and prosperity. In this way, you can bring the change in the society and the world.  Strengthen your spine. Fight to the finish. Take your battle to your logical end to build a better India and a better world. Jai Hind!

When others’ have problems, people often think that it is somebody’s problem. If you ignore, it becomes your problem finally. Here goes the story:

I worked in a private engineering college as a professor. The college served one month notice due to their administrative problems. But it did not give me relieving order, service certificate and last salary drawn certificate at the time of my leaving the service. Worse, it did not give me salary for the last three months. The owner of the college was with an autocratic and feudal mindset. He had lots of money. Hence, his ego was filled with lots of arrogance and adamancy. He treated the principals, professors and faculty members in his group of colleges as puppets. He believed in the philosophy of ‘use and throw’ and ‘divide and rule’.  I did not appreciate his unprofessional and unethical practices but I continued to serve in the college as the students revered me and respected me. They gave me lots of love and affection for my dedication and commitment. I tried to reform the system but my hands were tied. Hence, I confined myself to sharing my knowledge with students regularly; and teaching and research during my leisure time. I also counseled, coached and mentored the students who approached me for guidance. In this way, I made a significant difference to students. Unfortunately, the father of the owner who was a visionary leader and founder of this group of educational institutions died and the position of the group of colleges was worsened. The senior professors, principals and directors resigned from the college as they did not appreciate the owner’s attitude and arrogance.

Suddenly I was served with one month notice and salaries to the faculty and non-teaching were not paid on time. I served as per the notice period but I was not given the service certificate, last pay drawn certificate and salary for a period of three months. I sent several reminders to the owner while serving in the college to keep things ready at the time of my leaving the college. Unfortunately, there was no response and things were not kept ready at the time of my leaving the college. The principals and director of the educational institution advised the owner to pay my salary for the period I served but the owner was adamant with an unethical mindset. He revealed his true colors by cheating me. He did not pay my salary for three months. I had lots of financial hardships as I still belonged to a lower middle class family and I depended on my salary. I was hoping that my salary will be paid on the last working day. Unfortunately, I was not paid salary and I was not allowed to continue my services also. I felt very bad about the unethical attitude of the owner.  

I raised my problem in various regional forums and with the officials of the affiliated university. Unfortunately, there was no response as the officials had an understanding and close nexus with the owner of the college. These officials were regularly invited for college functions and anniversaries and paid with heavy honorarium. I felt that corruption entered in this way into educational institutions. I approached other national forums to bring awareness and started mobilizing other intellectuals in India on social media including my four blogs. Most of them initially felt that it was my problem. I reminded them clearly that today I was cheated and tomorrow they will be cheated. Today it is my problem and tomorrow it will be their problem. The intellectuals understood the gravity of the situation and joined the movement and pressurized the unethical owner of the private college to pay my salary. Finally, I got my three months of salary thanks to the support of other intellectuals who felt that somebody’s problem might become everybody’s problem tomorrow.


Conclusion

John D MacDonald quoted, “Integrity is not a conditional word. It doesn’t blow in the wind or change with the weather. It is your inner image of yourself, and if you look in there and see a man who won’t cheat, then you know he never will.”  Most people often think ‘what is in it for me?’ People don’t intervene until it becomes their problem. It is not a healthy sign. To conclude, never think that it is somebody problem. Always empathize with others. It is always ‘just is right’, not ‘might is right’. We must always support ethical values and principles to bring a positive change in the society. Above all, remember that truth alone triumphs in the world. The people who cheated intellectuals and educators never rested in peace. They suffered at the end.

“Shimon Peres ― A Dreamer, Doer and a Visionary Leader who Achieved Israel’s Peace and Prosperity” ―Professor M.S.Rao

One of the living visionary leaders I admire the most is Shimon Peres. He is an author, statesman, and a great dreamer.  He was the ninth President of Israel from 2007 to 2014. He won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize together with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat for the peace talks that he participated in as Israeli Foreign Minister, producing the Oslo Accords.

Shimon Peres is a great dreamer and doer. He is an inspiration to the world.  There are a number of leadership lessons we can learn from him. Here are some of them.  

Dream Big. People are often scared of dreaming big because bigger the dreams bigger the expectations from all the stakeholders.  But the fact is that to dream low is a crime. Since you dream always, why don’t you dream big to achieve big in your life. Shimon Peres is a great dreamer. He once remarked, “I was a great dreamer. But today, when people ask me, what’s your greatest mistake, I say my dream was too small. I recommend to young people whose world it is today – dream big, don’t hesitate. The greater your dreams, the more you can achieve.”
Be an Optimist. Shimon Peres is an optimist. He has the ability to see the silver lining on the dark cloud. When the entire world believed that there was no future for Israel, he proved them wrong by leading from the front to take Israel to the present position. He rightly remarked, “Optimists and pessimists die the same way. They just live differently. I prefer to live as an optimist.”
Believe in Human Resources. Israel is not blessed with natural resources. It has lots of challenges including enemies around. But Shimon Peres persevered and persuaded others to create peace to take Israel to great heights globally. He believed more in human resources and talent. He channeled them to build Israel as a great country in the world. He said, “When you have nothing, you discover. You have something that is called a human being.” He adds, “History is the story of people who have blessed the land – not land that has blessed people. At a very early age, I learnt that you have to cultivate the human being.”
Keep Things Confidential. Shimon Peres is noted for attending several secret meetings. He is a highly confidential person. He keeps cards close to his chest. It is tough for his enemies to predict his movements. At times he befriends with his enemies. He believes in the philosophy of ‘there are no permanent friends and permanent enemies in the world’ to achieve the final objective of global peace and prosperity.

Learn these leadership lessons and customize them as per your requirements to grow as a great global leader.
